Speakers for the August 17, 2019 OBBA Meeting

1:00 to 1:40 Jay Wright –”The influence of Blue Jays on forest change in Ohio.” I am using nanotags for this project, mainly to help track Blue Jay survival, rather than migration. I can bring several different kinds of tags to show the group. Nanotags are useful on small and medium sized birds to study movements of individual birds to determine habitat selection and dispersal. Jay is a graduate student at the Ohio State University under Dr. Christopher Tonra.

1:45 to 2:20 Matt Shumar – Ohio bird banders use the information in the OBBA II Atlas to find useful information on Ohio avian population dynamics.

2:30 to 2:45 Short break

2:45 to 3:20 Jeff Hays with Raptor Inc. – 25 years of Banding Rehabilitated Raptors. Raptor injuries range from abandoned juveniles, emaciation, injuries to the eyes, legs, wings and viscera. What can be done to return the injured raptors to the wild and possibly enter the local breeding populations? Many hours of volunteers and veterinarians work to rehab the injured birds with varying degrees of success. Jeff will provide some amazing insights to the survival of injured raptors. Jeff has some unique photos to show the success in helping injured birds.
